Three members of an extended Afghan family start a new life in Iran as refugees, unaware that they will face a decades-long struggle to be “home.” I saw it at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Told in three stories, “In the Land of Brothers” manages to capture the essence, complications, and heartbreaking scenarios of political conflict, relationships, culture, and the brutality of reality. The filmmakers managed to capture the themes, tone, and writing style for each of the three stories with good emotions, interesting characters, and tense and depressing moments without being awkward or over the top. Each character and writing style is handled with maturity, and the performances from all the cast members are strong. It really brought out the emotions between the characters and the underlying message and purpose of the film. The camerawork, set design, and soundtrack are beautiful. There were moments that touched and saddened me watching it. Personally, the first and third stories remain the most influential. While the second has some pacing flaws, it was still good. Overall, the film strives to be another good Iranian film.
