This 6-part Netflix spy thriller promised a lot, but ultimately fell short of everything it could have been. Expectations were high, with a stellar cast including Keira Knightley as the ninja-kicking, gun-toting action hero and Ben Whishaw, her former mentor and current colleague. Both are operatives in a top-secret mercenary espionage organization called Black Doves, overseen by Sarah Lancashire and doing her best Judi Dench as "M" in a hideous platinum blonde wig.
The trio worked together, but alone, to uncover a grand conspiracy
It certainly starts with a bang as we see three young people murdered in central London. There’s a separate plot that deals with the death of China’s ambassador to Britain, whose party’s central daughter has also accidentally disappeared, threatening all sorts of international political controversy. It’s no big surprise that the two developments converge later on, with both stories overlapping with Knightley and Whishaw’s actions, not least because she’s married to the government’s defense minister.
She’s caught in the political fallout caused by the ambassador’s death, and she also had a passionate affair with one of the three killed at the start
other characters are brought into the kaleidoscopic story as Knightley and Whishaw are drawn deeper and deeper into an increasingly inscrutable plot while mountainous proportions pile up around them and around them, sometimes in their hands, while Whishaw still has time to rekindle an old romance. Sharply directed with believable acting from an A-list cast, for me it somehow failed on its early promise, flying off with an overwrought plot that relied too much on coincidence, gun violence and strange, idiosyncratic characters. When it all came together at the end, I felt like it had fallen somewhere between James Bond-style fantasy and Le Carre-style realism, and the escapism unfortunately won out in the end.

When I started watching it, I had a tendency to, almost at first, binge watch all the remaining episodes, but after about episode 4, I’m afraid cracks started to show that no amount of sharp dialogue and quick jokes could make up for (and there were some good ones). It picked up again, becoming tense and exciting, even though it relied heavily on exposition and didn’t seem to know when to stop. Eventually, though, it did, and even did so with a “Die Hard”-style Christmas-time tie-in, but ultimately it all felt too jumbled, jumbled, and confusing to really work for me.
