That’s the most infuriating thing
Scenario
A high-powered CEO puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern. Jean Reno filmed scenes for the movie, but she was completely cut from the finished film. Featured in Graham Norton To the fans: Nicole Kidman/Cynthia Erivo/James Norton/Chris McClausland/Benson Boone (2024). We’ve seen this movie done many times and much better. This story can be done right with emotion, sensuality, and intensity. This one had none of that. What it lacked most and its biggest downfall; it had no credibility. None with the characters, plot, or backstory. There’s only one person on this entire journey that you feel for, and you feel for him because of the only decent performance worth mentioning.
The foundation was intriguing
And even he’s left with a horrible story arc before all is said and done. A brilliant married businesswoman with a dramatic past starts a scabrous affair with a young intern. Lifetime built an entire channel around that premise. Nicole Kidman, as the lead, is also exciting. She’s a beautiful, experienced actress who oozes power. But, like a mother-of-pearl inlay, this was just a wasted use of all those basic elements. Baby Girl’s story, while understandable, is very poor. We get a little insight into how Romy (Nicole Kidman) rose to the heights in the business world. It’s unclear who does what at the company and what, if anything, happens there.
We just don’t believe it
A new batch of interns are brought in, including a pompous, loudmouthed brat named Samuel (Harris Dickinson). He immediately picks up on Romy’s quirks and uses them to somehow manipulate her into risking it all. It’s established at this point in the film that Romy has some serious issues when it comes to sex. Whether it’s because of their past (which is mentioned but never really explained) or trying to deal with their position of power. The chemistry between Kidman and Dickinson lacks any kind of magic or charm. And when scenes like the ones we see in this film, which live and breathe chemistry, when there isn’t any, it becomes sad and laughable. Samuel comes across as a spoiled punk and you hate him from the start. That makes it even harder to believe that Romy is the least bit interested in this guy, kink or not. I could find better on Google.
Halina Reijn is a capable filmmaker on both sides of the camera
At the center of all this is also Romy’s husband (Jacob), Antonio Banderas. Jacob is a loving, patient and attentive man who does his best to understand and accompany Romy. There’s no doubt that they have intimacy issues, but you get the feeling that they are being pushed around rather than talked about. Even when he finds out about the affair, he’s fair and reacts as expected. Banderas is the only person in this film, actor and character, that I could feel empathy for. (Side note) – If you get tired of the movie and want to find a way to entertain yourself, just close your eyes. All the scenes with Banderas now feel like a Puss in Boots movie. The biggest disappointment and surprise is that the movie is written and directed by a woman. If anyone should be able to convey what she wants Romy to convey, it’s her.
If a man made this movie, I would understand the disconnect
I would tell him to stop trying to get into a woman’s head about these things. But there is no excuse here for what we get from the story and performances. Baby Girl is rated R for strong sexual content, nudity, and language. Even before the first scene comes into focus, you know what this movie is about. Make sure you are comfortable with the person you are watching it with and that you are both mature enough not to laugh during the sexy scenes. I am giving it one star because zero stars might seem like I forgot to add some.
